A Lighthouse You Don’t Want To Visit.

The Lighthouse (2019) tells the story of two lighthouse keepers who try to maintain there sanity whilst living on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890’s.

Written and Directed By Robert Eggers, it was the wildest and most poetically moving film I’ve witnessed in 2019. Robert Eggers has the most interesting and bizarre mind and I absolutely love him for that.

The Film....

The film follows Ephraim Winslow, Played By Robert Patterson (Good Times, High Life), and Thomas Wake, Played By William Defoe (At Eternity's Gate, American Psycho) as they begin there four week long work shift in a lighthouse on a rock in the middle of nowhere.

Now the film isn’t actually out in the UK until January 31st but I managed to see it early thanks to the Picturehouse in Liverpool as part of there Surprise Film.

From the moment the film started I knew I was in for an amazing time, from the sound design to the production design to the use of black & white to tell the story all accumulated to a absolute amazing and crazy tale.

The 1hr 50min runtime flew by and before I knew it the film was over and I was just sat there gobsmacked at what I had witnessed, it truly boggled my mind. To me this showed me that Robert Egger’s has crafted and created a story that as well as being bonkers was created so well that you don’t even realise the time and you genuinely get sucked into his world he has created. There were moments in which the way he wrote it made the audience also feel like they were loosing there minds just like the Winslow and Wake.

The Cast....

Standing our for me acting wise was William Defoe, there were moments in which I totally forgot I was watching him on screen and the way he gets involved with this role is exceptional, I’d love to see him get nominated for some Best Actor awards but I very much doubt the big league award shows such as the Oscars will.

Even though Defoe stood out, I appreciated Patterson’s performance in this, not his groundbreaking role but it up there with some of his best work. He was the more main lead between the two of them and he did put in a great performance but I won’t go into details to not ruin anything.

To Conclude.....

The Lighthouse (2019) will be one of the most bonkers and weirdest films you’ll watch all year but the 1hr 50min runtime will fly by and you will be sucked into this world Eggers has crafted and you’ll love every minute of it.

The Lighthouse (2019) releases 31st January 2020 in the United Kingdom.
