The Hunt (2020)

Maybe I’ll get hunted after this review!!!

The Hunt (2020) tells the ‘controversial’ story of twelve strangers who wake up in the middle of a field and have no clue how they got there. Unknown to them they are being hunted for sport by a group of ruthless elitists who are blood hungry for their deaths.

Written By Damon Lindelof & Nick Curse and Directed By Craig Zobel, I hate to tell you that this is the 2nd worst film I’ve seen thus far in 2020, not that we’ve had many new releases since a certain pandemic hit the entire world.

The Film....

I didn’t entirely know what to expect from this movie other than it looked like it was going to be a disappointment from its trailers, so it lived up to something at least. It just didn’t do anything for me and my emotions the entire time, the characters didn’t have any emotion to them, the story felt flat and messy, damn the performance I enjoyed the most was the pig in the little shirt and boots.

The film is a massive F you to the PC culture that finds anything and everything offensive. That being said they try balance this out by adding in some dark humor that you genuinely don’t know wether to laugh or not and wether it was intentional or not. It’s main offence is that of rednecks and how they like to use guns for everything and how “dim witted” they truly are, for me though that just didn’t work and felt like it was thrown in there to cause a bit of drama, as if we haven’t enough of that already. It was your typical American style comedy that blends the most basic of jokes into the least funny characters that ultimately for me didn’t work, think way back to Disney Channel shows such as Suite Life Of Zack And Cody and That’s So Raven type of comedy but more adult. I also found it to be somewhat predictable too, I won’t go into specifics as it will spoilt the movie.

The entire final act was absolutely appalling and really brought my rating down, this being the most vital part of the film should have brought in an impressive fight sequence that should have made me want to spur on the protagonist but instead it just didn’t, it went to a place that was just not believable and I gave up all hope by that point.

The Cast....

I’m not going to list all the characters as we’ll be here all day but the main stars of the movie did bring somewhat of a good performance which I could somewhat get behind.

The two main characters were Crystal, played by Betty Gilpin (Stuber, The Grudge) and Anthea, played by Hilary Swank (Logan Lucky, Insomnia). Betty Gilpin ultimately made this film bearable and brought an empty but badass performance as Crystal.

It a real shame there wasn’t anyone else that really stood out for me, everyone kinda just gave an okay to mediocre performance that you’d expect from a film like this. We’re kinda all over the place with characters and there’s that many of them we don’t get time with them to feel any emotion connection to them.

To Conclude....

The Hunt (2020) wasn’t really worth the time, money or effort that was made into making this movie and felt like a massive rip off to The Purge (2013) but gave us some gory scenes that will sure please gory lovers and an dispassionate and badass performance from Betty Galpin that made this movie enjoyable to an extend.
