The Best 21st century Film Based On The Struggles And Dangers Of Social Media.

Fresh from my viewing of 2018's Searching, I am engaged in many thoughts about the dangers of social media and how scary it can be.
Aneesh Chaganty's Searching is a visual in-look into the 21st century horror most parents face with their children on social media. With the digital age always evolving and parents having to keep up, most parents don't really know what there children are upto online which this film explores in great detail.
With our main character David Kim (Played by John Cho) the film centers around him loosing his wife, Pamela Kin ( Played by Sara Sohn) to cancer and having to cope living as a single father to their daughter Margot Kim (Played by Michelle La) and raising her in this digital age. What was striking to me was how true to life it was and how the internet has evolved massivly from when I was growing up. I remember growing up in the age of Windows 7 on the PC and remembering my experiences, the infamous hill background, the Paint app, playing Addicting Gaming and having all the Ads pop up on the screen, it really hit me in my nostolgica feels. Then we get into the age of Facebook which for the majority of us is where our social media journeys started, we all made profiles well under the age limit. As the film progresses we start to see more and more of just how technology has evolved and society has become fake towards eachother and how we feel we have "fans" because we do live videos on whatever we are doing and are gaining a following. Its a sad reality that we live in and this film expresses that perfectly, especially how all of the people who knew Margot weren't actually friends with her but as soon as she went missing they all used that to gain popularity and views as it's how the majortiy of the younger generation have grown up. It's also increadably scary just how easy it is to create a fake profile online and no one know who that person is and how easy it is to just simply jump onto Google images, get a random photo of basically anyone in the world and create a fake life of said person in the picture.

I do feel that this film is very very close to almost being a masterpiece but the story for me is a little too far fetched to what would happen in the real world. With its many twists and turns, the ending twist of the film made it unbelivable that something like this would strech to that level but all the more it still was a thrill of a ride.
To create a film that soley utilises a computer screen is a work of genuis and Aneesh Chaganty should be very proud of himself for what he has created. I also want to add just how much of a powerhouse performance John Cho puts in, seriously the man made me belive every twist and turn and how good he was as a stay at home detective, I certainly wouldn't have thought of doing half the stuff he did and the man is full of expressions. I imagine he's every directors dream to work with, not just being a lovely guy, but also for the insane amount of expressions he can pull and make you feel for his character at every given moment.

To summerise this film, It's easily one of the best social media based, if not THE best, movies on the horror's of social media and how we simply shouldn't trust everyone online. John Cho puts in one of the best performaces Iv'e ever seen and is a very cleverly thought out and produced film.
