Tarantino’s Love Letter To Hollywood

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019) tells the tale of Rick Dalton, a TV Hollywood actor who struggles getting jobs in the late 60’s with the changing of that era, along with his stuntman and close friend Cliff Booth.
Written & Directed By Quentin Tarantino, for me this is Tarantino’s most personal and affectionate movie to date and I will say it now it’s a masterpiece for many different reasons, let me explain why.....

The Film....
We see right off the bat and how it establishes Rick Dalton as a massive television Hollywood western star on a show called Bounty Law, which Quentin Tarantino made up for the movie but is considering to make into a real life short TV show. With Rick is his stuntman Cliff Booth, who is rumoured to have ‘killed’ his wife at a boat trip. The movie does a good job at showing the struggle to those who aren’t the stars in these major Hollywood productions in this difficult era of Hollywood.
As the story continues we are introduced to Sharon Tate, an upcoming actress whose loved in Hollywood. Seeing her just enjoying her life and the hints of the Manson gang coming to her house and sussing the place out, obviously we all know the upsetting outcome but Tarantino rewrites her tragic life and gives Tate the life she deserved which I found heartwarming and touching to say the least.
For Tarantino this is more than just his 9th Hollywood blockbuster, this is about him growing up in the 60’s, watching shows & movies like The Wrecking Crew (1968) and The Great Escape (1963) to the real life radio station KHJ Radio, which somewhat plays as a supporting character making you feel the era this films set in. This is Tarantino showing and making us appreciate how this was the height of Hollywood and the starting of him wanting to write/direct movies. The way they shut down Hollywood Boulevard to recreate a 1969 looking Hollywood is extraordinary and getting every detail down to a T, from the signs on the shops to the leaflets in the window, every attention to detail is crucial and it shows when you watch it.
For me this film makes me realise how far Hollywood has come and makes me appreciate and respect the craft that’s come out of Hollywood to this very day and how one day I will achieve my goal of making and producing films in Hollywood. It really is a film made for movie lovers, especially those who’ve grown up with this era of movies and takes them down a path of nostalgia.

The Cast....
Rick Dalton is played by Leonardo DeCaprio (Romeo & Juliet, The Revenant) and playing Cliff Booth is Brad Pitt (Fight Club, Ad Astra) and as a duo are brilliant together. There acting style just bounces off each other in this film and you can feel the friendship and brotherhood between Rick & Cliff thanks to the acting of DeCaprio & Pitt.
For me personally I thought Brad Pitt was the leading role in this movie and quite possibly showed one of his best acting roles to date, there was many a time where I was enthralled into his character to the point he almost felt real, especially being accompanied by his trusty canine companion Brandy.
Let’s not however forget about the gorgeous Sharon Tate, played by Margot Robbie (I Tonya, The Wolf Of Wall Street), who portrays Tate beautifully and sincerely. She brings a heartwarming and touching feel to the movie and shows the coming of age of the newer actors in Hollywood, which is why Tarantino uses Tate in this film as she’s the perfect example of this.

To Conclude....
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019) is quite simply Tarantino’s love letter to Hollywood and how the ending of the 1960’s meant change for the TV & Movie industry and how it affects those in it whilst also sprinkling his own Tarantino spice and rewriting history just a little bit.
I will forever love this film and I know not many people liked it but did they really get it? Let me know what you think? Did you enjoy Once Upon A Time In Hollywood?
