Divorce Told In The Most Human Way.

Marriage Story tells the story of Charlie, Played by Adam Driver (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Lucky Logan) and Nicole, Played By Scarlett Johansson (Avengers Endgame, Her), who are going through a somewhat ugly divorce through lawyers who want the best for both. The story is what divorcing is really like, not just in America but how it affects all parties involved.
Written And Directed By Noah Baumbach (The Meyerowitz Stories, Frances Ha), I can hands down say this is my favourite film of 2019 and Baumbach’s defining film in his career so far. Let’s dive into why....

The Film....
Marriage Story (2019) is one of the most beautiful and heart provoking films of the decade, it strikes something inside of you that makes you feel sorrow for both parties involved. It’s been crafted with such sensitivity and heart it’s hard not to get upset by the end of the film, which I fully did and not afraid to admit.
The way Baumbach has written this film makes you feel apart of both there lives, you sit and listen to them both and how they both feel, making you feel conflicted on which ones in the right and literally making you feel like you are the child of them. Divorces can be tough not just on the parents but also the child/children involved, this film perfectly explains that and seeing how on parent somewhat “bribes” the child into wanting them to stay with them.
The use of cinematography and shots are used to absolute perfection in this movie, many of them are so stunning I couldn’t help myself but say out loud “Ooooo what a shot that was” or “Damn that was used perfectly”. There’s a scene in particular in which both Charlie & Nicole staring at each other and the fade from one to the other is so subtle it’s extraordinarily brilliant.
It’s a very well and balanced movie that toys with you emotionally and mentally, if anyone has been through a divorce, especially in America, then this film will strike many emotions.

The Cast....
Where do I even begin with this....
Adam Driver for me needs an Oscar nomination and a deserved win for the performance he puts into this film. He delivers one, if not the best, performance in his career to date and in parts make you feel so sad and deflated for his character Charlie but then in other parts makes you feel so intimidated and anxious its absolutely unreal. He also sings which for me was an added bonus to his performance and was totally unexpected to be honest with you, but totally worth it and fitted in very well to the film.
Scarlett Johansson on the other-hand brings some hard hitting and heartfelt acting which compliments Driver’s performance so perfectly, it’s like they were made to act together in a film such as this. She makes you feel sorrow for what Charlie has put her through, yet somewhat angry the way she’s treating Charlie through the divorce. I don’t know many actresses with the right director that can pull such acting off.

To Conclude....
Marriage Story (2019) crafts a personal and humane story of divorce through the tales of both Charlie & Nicole and how ugly and toxic it can get when lawyers get involved. Baumbach has created a beautiful yet heart-breaking tale that I know will go down as a classic in the future and something I will watch when times are tough.
Marriage Story is now available on Netflix worldwide.
