A Joyous Tale On Empowering Women!!!

Little Women (2019) tells the tale of four sisters who have to learn the value of growing up in a post Civil War America whilst keeping that bond as women strong.
Written and Directed By Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), I can safely say this was one of 2019’s most powerful and heartfelt films that will motivate and empower women worldwide.

The Film....
What a joyous and uplifting film Greta Gerwig has produced after her last movie, Lady Bird (2017), proved she was a master of her craft. Right off the bat we are introduced to Josephine “Jo” March, Played by Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird, Brooklyn), who is established as a strong female character that wants to provide for her family no matter what from the first few minutes on screen.
As the movie progresses we keep flipping between the past and present and whilst I kind of understand why they did this to keep suspense as to what happens to the family, for me it’s the films biggest downfall, feeling messy and, at times, difficult to keep up with what is happening and understanding which scenes are past and which scenes are present, although this isn’t the case the whole way through the film.
I can’t help but come away feeling a sense of joy and compassion and thankful that Gerwig has crafted a film that makes the point of “Why can’t a women chase her dreams and have to marry wealthy to be a house wife because society has deemed it to be that way?”. I really hope this film impacts women viewing it to come away feeling empowered and also help men understand feminism and the way women have been treated from century’s ago and why to this day women are campaigning to be equal to men. The film has a lovely charm to it thanks to that of its four main sisters who grasp your heart in different ways and following them on this journey of adulthood to becoming a woman.

The Cast....
Everyone in this film plays a role that adds to it‘s heart and joy but those who stand out the most are Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh who stand out in there leading roles.
Every moment with Saoirse Ronan on screen feels empowered and touching with moments of her character feeling lost and unsure where her life is taking her because of how strong a woman she is. Whilst every moment Florence Pugh is on screen brings humour but also a sense of why do women have to accept what society deems as normal, informing the audience with a strong and poignant speech about how she will have to wed a wealthy man and look after him post Civil War as she won’t make her dreams of art and paintings a reality because men won’t accept her as a female artist as its ‘wrong’.

To Conclude....
Little Women (2019) is a empowering and heartfelt film on family and how women’s dreams shouldn’t be disowned because a man says so, but more to the point staying together as women through everything, no matter how hard times get. It’s only downfall is it’s editing which can be looked over thanks to its cast and its touching story.
