Is There Something Over This Rainbow?

Judy (2019) tells the story of Hollywood legend Judy Garland, played by Renée Zellweger, and how life treated her after The Wizard Of Oz (1939).
Directed By Rupert Goold and Written By Tom Edge and Peter Quilter, it really was a harrowing and quite depressing in-look into what her life was like, which was quite relevant.

I honestly was expecting more from this film, it felt like a rather safe biopic about Garland. Sure I wasn’t expecting them to glorify her being depressed or the horrible way she was treated behind the scenes on The Wizard Oz but there was something not quite right about this film.
I actually think it was the casting decisions, for as amazing as Renée Zellweger was and I can see almost certainly getting an Oscar nomination for her performance, I feel as though they could of cast Judy better!. They could have had Emily Blunt, Margot Robbie or someone else. I don’t even think Zellweger looks anything like Garland (see picture below) which for me is a massive letdown. This for me could be this years Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) where it wins awards it maybe shouldn’t be winning?.

I will say however that there was 2 very touching moments in this film that made up for its bad casting choices which really did make Zellweger shine, the first being when Garland went round to the gay couples house and found out about how they’ve been treated by the authorities. When shes cradling one of them because he is in floors of tears really upset me as I have family and friends who too are gay and if anything like that happened to them I’d be so angry and upset and this scene proved just that.
The second scene is the final scene which I won’t spoil for those who haven’t seen it but what I will say is if we are basing Zellweger‘s performance of that ending scene then she certainly deserves an awards nomination. It also it in the Top 5 for the saddest movie endings of 2019 alongside Toy Story 4 (2019) and The Farewell (2019).

To Conclude.....
Judy (2019) is a safe and plain biopic about one of Hollywood’s elite that doesn‘t branch out of its comfort space and uses flashbacks to fill in gaps in the story. Zellweger will be up for an Oscar nomination with her touching performance as Garland which may win her some big awards next year.
