One Small Step For Man....

Apollo 11 (2019) tells the true accounts of the 1969 moon landing with breathtakingly restored footage that’s over 50 years old.

Directed by Todd Douglas Miller, this documentary was as groundbreaking as everyone told me it was. It propels you literally to the moon and back with its stunningly resorted footage that makes you almost believe it was filmed in this day and age.

Being a massive space enthusiast, I was gutted when I missed this in its theatre release, but luckily my university put on a viewing in Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre and I jumped at the opportunity with open arms. I’m so glad I did as this film screams to be seen on the biggest screen possible, it was mesmerisingly gorgeous and the fact that it was all real archive footage made it all the more human to me.

It takes an unusual angle on the documentary aspect but for me it worked perfectly, the run time was perfect, the use of archive footage and the no narrator worked in its favour. Using only voice recordings from the Kennedy Space Centre and Apollo 11 whilst they are in communication added to the realism of the documentary and gave me goosebumps, you can hear almost everything that was said.

What added to the film was it’s amazing score, produced by Matt Morton. It added to the atmospheric feel and kept the pace of the film flowing, adding and creating suspense to breathtaking moments such as the lunar landing. The documentary has already won many awards and it will win big at the Oscars and possibly BAFTA’s too next year which for me deserves all the awards and more. It really is a cinematic achievement that will be shown in schools and astrological classes for years to come.

The way Todd Douglas Miller has crafted and gathered all the archive footage and somehow pieced it together that takes us on this journey the astronauts went on is outstanding and I would love to see more of his work if anyone can tell/link me. It made me realise just how accurate Damien Chazelle’s First Man (2018) was and putting the two films together makes for a perfect understanding of Neil Armstrong’s background leading upto the launch and also what it was really like up there.

To Conclude....

Apollo 11 (2019) is a visceral and phenomenal cinematic achievement that everyone who worked on it should be incredibly proud that paid respects to the astronauts and all those involved with the space programme.

If you love anything space then this is a no brainier and deserves your attention immediately.
